Mr Terry Gordon
General Manager Operations
Coffee Club Australia.
Dear Mr Gordon
Complaint about Coffee Club Manager North Lakes
I am not in the habit of writing to the Senior Executives of organisations whenever I feel aggrieved. However, in this instance I feel the matter is serious enough to warrant this action and I hope you will spare me the time to read my letter.
I am a senior of 83 years of age and my wife is 79 years old. My wife Lyne has had surgery over the years on both her knees, her back one hip, and also major open heart surgery (with a Pacemaker). For these and other reasons Lyn cannot sit in the hard chairs at the Coffee Club as it hurts her back.
So when we go (on most days) for a coffee we always look for a vacant soft chair. Usually when one is not available we do some shopping and come back later. Now and then when we return there is a table free to use, but sometimes there are no soft chairs.
In this situation I look nearby for a vacant soft chair where only one person is seated at a table for two. I then ask that person if the second seat is required, and if not would that person mind if I swap it for one of the hard chairs at our table. I ALWAYS ASK IN A RESPECTFUL MANNER and never argue or cajol the other customer. In other words, I am NEVER rude to another customer. ABSOLUTELY NOT. The people I have asked nearly always offer the soft chair for exchange with the hard chair. Indeed, I get the impression most are very pleased to be able to help in this regard. The Manager suggested that we book a table but, I should point out that for various reasons, we are unable to “reserve” a chair as our movements are often hard to predict time wise.
I must also indicate to you that we have NEVER asked any person/s to move from the table they are seated at .. and we never would. Of course, some people may choose to do that anyway.
The main responsibility I have at this time in our lives is to take care of my far less able wife. So, I take that responsibility very seriously and that is demonstrated in my wish to seat my wife in a comfortable seat where possible.
The Managers accusation that I was “rude“ is absolutely wrong and I find her assertion to be most offensive. She obviously has no regard for my duty to Lyne. Surely just very politely asking for a chair swap is not in itself a “rude” thing to do, especially when the reasons for that request are important and valid.
I do know that the person who gave us that (empty) chair swap today was not annoyed and she had a friendly chat to me for several minutes after it.
I suspect that a particular person (I believe I can identify) gave the Manager a somewhat distorted and colourful version of what happened.
This still does not justify the Manager taking a very negative attitude to our needs and making accusations that I was rude to someone? My wife was quite upset by the Managers behaviour.
I hasten to point out that (almost) all the staff have been courteous over the years and I am grateful for their great service and friendly attitude. I do suspect however that one member of the staff has done the wrong thing today and contributed to a nasty situation.
For now, we will not go near the Coffee Club North Lakes unless I receive an apology from the store Manager. Neither will my immediate friends. We have more than enough stresses in our lives without a need to argue publicly at length with a store manager.
After all these years I am very disappointed at what has happened.
It has completely changed our view of the Coffee Club at North Lakes.
Yours sincerely
